Juste une brève ... l'annonce en septembre du "We will become birds" d'Erin McKeown, petite miss énergique qui nous avait entre autres agréablement surpris lors de sa première partie d'Ani DiFranco au Trabendo à Paris à la fin mars de cette année ... Depuis, du chemin a été fait (sauf par nos disquaires qui ignorent toujours ce genre de talent avec effrontement) et ce nouvel album est l'occasion rêvée de (re)découvrir cette artiste rock, un rien folk, dont les textes aux accents engagés et tout à la fois poétiques ne manqueront pas de lui forger une place définitive dans notre hexagone et au-delà ... une possible tournée ? ]]>Le 14 février 1943, à Kinston (Etats-Unis), Maceo Parker voit le jour. Kellis et Melvin, ses deux frères, seront vite, à son instar, mordus de musique jazz, funk, inspirés par leur propre père, figure incontournable de Blue Notes. Mais c'est en 1964 que Maceo Parker fait ses armes, aux côtés de Kellis, en intégrant la section cuivre de James Brown, alors en pleine effervescence créatrice et en participant à des titres mondialement reconnus tels que "Sex Machine". Il assurera ce rôle près de 25 ans durant, sans oublier sa propre carrière solo (dès 1990), menée avec brio, en parallèle de noms comme JB's Horns, Fred Wesley & the Horny Horn, Funkadelic surtout, puis aux côtés de George Clinton (dès 1977), Bootsy Collins et dernièrement Prince (à partir de 2000, en tournée, et sur de nombreux albums, dont 3121 en 2006), où il cotoiera notamment Candy Dulfer, qui participera d'ailleurs en retour à quelques uns de ses albums (dont Made by Maceo et School's in!).
Maceo Parker participera également en 1984, aux côtés de Fred Wesley, et sous la houlette de George Clinton, qui endosse la casquette de producteur , au titre « Freaky Styley », sur le premier album de Red Hot Chili Peppers, du même nom. Il épaulera également la grande Ani Di Franco à diverses occasions, rapprochant ainsi les mondes pourtant différents qu'il cotoie de la folk, du jazz (Keith Richards tout de même) du rock limite métal (Living Colour bien sûr, mais aussi Jane's Addiction), du blues (Marcus Miller par exemple) et du funk (Parliament, P-Funk All stars ...) !
Depuis Funk overload, Corey Parker, son fils, l'a rejoint, casquette sur le crâne, sur scène et sur album, apportant un phrasé funk, parfois hip hop aux compositions groove ultra colorées et dansantes de Maceo. Homme de scène, qui improvise des bains de foule, saxophone aux lèvres, des Zéniths aux scènes jazz ouvertes (Juan les Pins, Jazz à Marsiac, etc.), lors de ses tournées fleuve (on parle de plusieurs centaines de concerts par an !), Maceo n'en a pas pour autant abandonné ses comparses festifs qui composent aujourd'hui le groupe de Prince, aux côtés d'Eric Leeds et Candy Dulfer pour ce qui est de la section saxophone. De très belles prestations, dont le Rave un2 the year de Prince (disponible en DVD) est une date marquante.
